How to Tell If Designer Frames Are Actually Real

Counterfeit eyewear is a real problem, especially buying online or from a seller you can't verify. Here's what to look for before you hand over your money for "designer" frames.

Check the price against reality

If the price feels too good to be true for a well-known luxury brand, it usually is. There's a real production and distribution cost baked into an authentic pair — even at a steep discount, there's a floor a genuine frame can't drop below and still be genuine.

Look at the engraving

Authentic frames carry precise, clean laser engraving — usually inside the temple arm — showing brand name, model number, size, and often a serial number. Counterfeit engraving tends to be shallow, smudged, or inconsistent in font.

Inspect the materials and finish

Genuine frames use high-grade acetate or metal alloys with a smooth, even finish. Check the hinges, screws, and joints closely — authentic hardware is tight and precise, while counterfeits often show visible glue, rough edges, or a hinge that just feels loose.

Ask where it actually came from

The simplest check of all: buy from a retailer who can tell you exactly where their inventory comes from. We source directly from authorized distributors, not grey-market resellers — it's the whole reason we can vouch for every pair on our wall.

Check the lenses themselves

Authentic designer sunglasses usually have the brand's logo etched subtly into one lens, plus a UV protection sticker that lists an actual UV rating — not just "100% UV protection" with no detail behind it.

When in doubt, ask an optician

Someone who handles designer eyewear daily can usually tell within seconds whether a frame is real. If you already own a pair you're unsure about, bring it in and we'll take a look.
