Contact Lens Care, Without the Guesswork

Contacts are safe and comfortable for most wearers, but a handful of habits make the difference between "no problem at all" and a preventable eye infection. Here's what actually matters.

Wash your hands first — every single time

Before you touch a lens, wash and dry your hands. Obvious, sure, but it's still the single most common way bacteria ends up on a lens.

Don't sleep in them unless you're told to

Unless your optician has specifically fit you with extended-wear lenses approved for overnight use, sleeping in regular contacts cuts oxygen flow to the cornea and meaningfully raises infection risk.

Stick to the replacement schedule

Dailies are worn once and tossed. Bi-weekly and monthly lenses have their own schedule too — stretching a lens past its intended life is one of the top causes of complications we see.

Never tap water, never saliva

Tap water can carry organisms that cause serious corneal infections. Fresh solution only — not water, not saliva, not even in a pinch.

Replace the case, not just the lenses

Swap your lens case every one to three months, rinse it with fresh solution (never water) after each use, and let it air dry.

Keep backup glasses in rotation

If your eyes feel irritated, give them a day off contacts — which means always having an up-to-date pair of glasses within reach.

Don't skip your annual fitting

Contact lens prescriptions get reassessed yearly even if your vision hasn't changed, because your optometrist is checking corneal health and lens fit, not just prescription strength.
